“In my works I developed a new technique where I make a collage of photos, but instead of using glue or cutting the photos on the computer I stitch the photos together with yarn. This way I bring together different places and situations that may be connected in a real or surreal manner.”

Gisoo Kim is a Korean artist based in Germany since 1997. After her studies at the art schools in
Seoul, Hamburg and Dusseldorf, she became a master's student in the sculpturing of Prof. Irmin Kamp
at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany.
In her earlier works, Kim created dresses, pinafores and fashionable accessories made of photos. At
first sight, they seemed to be familiar and wearable due to their volumes and dynamic draperies. Parts
were stitched together according to general clothes production, and photos were attached to the cloth.
Today, her works still focus on compositions, but now in a more pictorial than sculptural way. From a
distance, the beholder might feel as if looking at a landscape, but with a closer look, it has a complexity
which transforms something obvious becomes surrealistic. The image is a merge of different types of
landscapes and structured perspectives, and it is also de-structured within. Sometimes it appears very
obvious or sometimes in a subtle way. Kim´s images invite viewers to experience a “familiar“image in
different dimensions and interpretations.
